Adamsdale Ceramic Pot Planter Set
If you’ve read any of our other guides to planters (which you can find in our gardening section here), then you’ve probably seen this planter set before. We think the Adamsdale Ceramic Pot Planter Set is simply lovely, and it therefore deserves a spot on this list.
The concentric diamond pattern combined with the bands of color at the top and bottom results in a striking look. These planters are so attractive, you could even just display them by themselves.
Naturally, they’re good for a desert rose, too, or else we wouldn’t have included them. Part of this is because of the drainage holes they have in the bottom that keep your plant from being submerged in standing water.
Another part of it is because of the ceramic they’re made out of. Ceramic is porous, which means it doesn’t hold on to water as long as other materials like plastic.
Basically, everything about these Adamsdale planters, from their wide shape to their porous material, could contribute to the wellbeing of your desert rose.
Pros
- Intriguing design that’s sold in two different color combinations.
- Three planters come in this set.
- Won’t keep your desert rose too wet.
- The material is resistant to weather conditions, making them suitable for inside or outside.
Cons
- If you put them indoors, you may need to buy a separate drainage tray, because they do not come with anything to put under the drainage holes.
Trentelman Ceramic Pot Planter Set
Like the sound of a set, but want it in a simpler design? The Trentelman Ceramic Pot Planter Set is a solid choice in more ways than one.
To start with, it’s glazed in a deep, vivid solid blue color. At a glance, it’s incredibly beautiful, and we know we’d personally love to have these planters in our home.
But like most things, there’s more than meets the eye here. For instance, they’re well-designed for drainage, with holes on the bottom so standing water can drip right out.
Even the coloration is more than you’d think at first. The deep blue tone works unbelievably well with the vibrant green of many plants.
And because you’re getting three of them in various sizes, you can start a young desert rose in the smallest one and move up to the largest in time.
Pros
- Bewitching blue color.
- Includes three total planters.
- The soil won’t stay too wet for long due to the drainage holes in the bottom.
Cons
- Does not come with any plug or tray to put underneath the holes.
- Only available in blue.

They’re so tough, you can safely use them both indoors and outdoors. If you live in a place that isn’t quite as green as you like, this planter could be just the right way to bring the forest to your home.
Pros
- Extremely natural-looking design.

Gambrel Peacock Novelty Planter
Trying to find a piece that’s truly one-of-a-kind? Then we’d recommend the Gambrel Peacock Novelty Planter.
This planter has the tail feathers of a peacock painted all over the sides. The result is an aesthetic that’s bold and eye-catching, and would complement a desert rose quite well.
Beyond that, even its shape is unique. It’s not every day you see a planter shaped like a teacup, after all.
Aside from its unquestionable quirkiness, it has the functionality to support your plant. This includes a drainage hole and saucer to contain any dripping water.
Pros
- From its shape to its pattern, we can safely say this planter is completely unique.
- Designed with a drainage hole and saucer.
- Long-lasting stone material.
Cons
- No other color options are offered for this planter.
What to Consider When Buying a Planter for your Desert Rose
Size and Shape
Desert roses aren’t particularly finicky. Because of this, they can go in pots of many shapes and sizes, but they generally prefer short and wide ones like what you might see a bonsai tree in.
That’s because their caudex likes to swell out, but their roots themselves don’t really reach down very far. It’s almost like they grow sideways rather than downwards.
Exactly how wide does the planter need to be? The answer to that question depends on what you want from your plant, as well as how big it is.
If you want to keep growing it to a bigger size, your planter should be at least two or three inches wider than the extent of its roots.

Drainage Holes
A desert rose’s natural habitat is tropical or subtropical regions. As you can imagine, this means they’re not used to sitting in damp earth for long.
They like when their soil quickly dries. Standing water is an enemy of theirs, and can lead to root rot.
The bottom line is, make sure there’s a good drainage system built in to the planter you choose. You should have at least one drainage hole in the bottom, although more may be better.
Material
Your planter’s material will influence how long it retains water, as well.
Take plastic into consideration. It’s not very porous, so water tends to remain in these planters longer, creating a hostile environment for a desert rose.
So which materials are more suitable? We’d recommend ceramic or terracotta.
If they’re not glazed on the inside, they’re naturally porous, allowing them to help absorb any surplus of water in your potting mixture.
