Best Planters for Avocado Trees
Self-Watering and Self-Aerating Round Planter Pot
While terracotta is the most commonly recommended material for an avocado tree’s planter, we feel this Self-Watering and Self-Aerating pot would also do. Although it’s made of plastic, it’s innovatively designed to allow plenty of drainage and ventilation.
How? The ventilation comes from the strips that are cut into the bottom, which also allow excess water to flow from the potting mixture.
The self-watering reservoir built into the bottom doesn’t come into contact with your avocado tree, either, so it won’t sit in water. Instead, it’s suspended above the water on hollow legs that make it possible for it to absorb however much it needs.
Basically, this planter is your friend if you’re a novice gardener.
- You can buy it in several colors and a few sizes.
- Allows for both drainage and airflow
- Adding more water to the reservoir is easy with the clip-on watering attachment.
- The material resists UV light and weather conditions.
- Its plastic may not look as good as terracotta or ceramic.
Mid-Century Pot with Plant Stand
Something about adding a wooden stand to your planter looks classy. With this planter, you’ll get both a ceramic pot and a gorgeous wooden stand to complement it.
Furthermore, the planter itself comes in three different colors. That gives this option more flexibility to combine well with any kind of decorations.
Each one was high-fired then finished with a matte that’s waterproof. This makes them durable and sturdy planters that you won’t have to replace so soon.
- It has a drainage hole at the bottom
- Includes a sturdy stand that doesn’t wobble.
- Three different colors to pick
- Waterproof matte helps protect the planter from water damage over time.
- It does not come with a drip tray to put underneath the drainage holes, although it does include a plug.

What to Consider when Buying a Planter for your Avocado Tree
Drainage and Ventilation
One of the first things you need to know about keeping a plant healthy is how much water it needs. It can be too easy to give any plant an excess of water in the wrong hands.
You can protect yourself (and your avocado tree) from this possibility by purchasing a planter with a drainage hole at the bottom. It functions as an exit for the water, letting any excess drop out the bottom rather than sit in the pot and cause root rot.
The second benefit to a drainage hole is that it helps air move through the potting mixture. As a result, water is allowed to evaporate more quickly.
If you find a planter you like, and it doesn’t have a drainage hole, you can also consider drilling one into the bottom of it yourself.
There are side benefits to various materials in a planter. Depending on the type of plant, some of these might be better or even crucial for its health.
Avocado trees shouldn’t sit in standing water. Because of this, a material that allows adequate drainage and airflow will be the best.
A drainage hole will help, of course, but the material can also contribute. Terracotta is incredibly wonderful for drainage and ventilation.
It naturally allows both air and moisture to flow through the potting mixture.
That doesn’t mean you couldn’t go with another material, like plastic. However, if you do, make sure it has a drainage hole and possibly some other openings for increased ventilation.

Size matters when it comes to plants. Putting them in a planter that’s too small or too large could damage them.
If you’re growing an avocado tree from a seed, you can use a planter that is anywhere from 6-8 inches in diameter. You can go above the requisite 8 inches in diameter for a better fit for trees that are a bit older.
As for the height of the planter, look for one that is at least two times larger than the length of the roots. It allows plenty of room for the avocado tree to grow.

Avocado is a smooth and creamy addition to a wide variety of recipes. The problem is, they can be pretty expensive to get at a store.
Fortunately, you can grow them from home. It’s true that if you’re starting from a seed, it’ll take a long time before your tree bears fruit.
But an avocado grown at home is something else. We think it’s worth waiting for.
Our personal selection for an avocado tree planter would be the Self-Watering and Self-Aerating Round Planter Pot. It’s not made from terracotta, which is a bit of a downside, but we think the slits in the bottom and the raised bed do plenty to protect plants from root rot.
We also like that it’s available in a few sizes. It wouldn’t be difficult to find one that would fit your avocado tree.
