Types of Electric Tomato Juicers for Canning and More

Before you start shopping around for a new juicer for canning tomato juice, you need to know how it works. That way, you can choose the right juicer for your unique juicing needs.

Masticating Juicers

Masticating Juicers

Masticating juicers (also called slow juicers or cold press juicers) can force all the juice out of tomatoes with the help of a slow-turning auger gear. The gear presses the tomatoes against a screen, and the machine reaches speeds of anything between 40 RPM and 100 RPM.

Once the juicer has pressed out every last drop of juice, you will have your tomato juice in one container and the dry pulp in another. Masticating juicers work so well that you won’t have to strain your juice. They deliver a very high juice yield with many nutrients still in the juice.

The drawbacks of masticating juicers are that they work slowly, so you’ll have to be patient, and they are more expensive than centrifugal juicers.

Centrifugal Juicers

These are the most popular juicers on the market, and they’re ideal for beginners or people on the go because they’re affordable and work very fast. Centrifugal juicers work with metal blades and high-speed force to get all the juices out of tomatoes. You can expect speeds of between 6,000 RPM and 14,000 RPM.

The juice yield isn’t quite as high as with masticating juicers, though centrifugal juicers are very loud. They also generate a lot of heat, which can cause oxidation that results in a loss of nutrients in the juice.

In most cases, centrifugal juicers are easy to use, very easy to clean, and don’t take up a lot of space.

centrifugal juicer tomato

Twin-Gear Juicers

As the name suggests, twin-gear juicers work with two gears (augers). These gears work hard to spin and pull ingredients in and chew them up. The ingredients are then pushed into a screen to extract all the juices.

You will get lots more nutrients in your juice if you use one of these juicers, but they are the most expensive option. Making soft foods like baby food, pasta, and more is easy with twin-gear juicers.

They also operate quietly, but they are quite bulky and can take up a lot of space in your kitchen.

What To Look For in The Best Tomatoes Juicers

blender with tomato juice

Several elements of tomato juicers determine how well they work and how good they’ll be for you. Here are some of the main features to look for when you’re buying a new tomato juicer.

Noise

No one likes machines that make a ruckus, so keep that in mind before putting down your money. Ideally, you want a tomato juicer that has noise levels of 60dB and lower, or you might get annoyed with how loud it is.

Cleaning

You have to clean your juicer after every use, or it won’t last as long as it could, and you’ll have serious cleanup sessions with pulp that got hard. As such, your juicer should be easy to disassemble and clean, and the removable parts should ideally be dishwasher safe.

Price

blender shopping

Your budget is essential, and you will likely want to stick to it, so you must shop around for the best price. Although juicers with multiple features are a bit more costly, they can save you money because they can do more.

Easy of Operation

Most juicers aren’t very complicated, but some come with instruction manuals that can confuse anyone. The best electric tomato juicer will be easy to use and not be frustrating.

Versatility

multi purpose juicer

A tomato juicer that can also juice other fruits and vegetables is much more desirable than juice, with only one type of ingredient. Some juicers can even make nut butter and almond milk! Get a clear idea of what a juicer can and cannot do before buying it.

Durability

Unless you’re okay with buying a new tomato juicer every six months or so, you should make sure the juicer you choose is durable. It should be made of quality materials that will last long.

Warranty

A warranty provides you with a sense of security and peace of mind that the manufacturer covers you if something goes wrong. The best electric tomato juicer will come with a 10-year warranty or more.

How to Make Homemade Tomato Juice with a Juicer

tomato juice in glass

Juicing tomatoes isn’t at all very complicated or difficult. You really can get delicious juice right at home. Here’s what you should do to juice tomatoes and get the kind of results you want.

Step One

Gather your tomatoes. For the best juice, you’ll need ripe and juicy ones that are naturally sweet, so you won’t have to add sugar. About 3 cups of tomatoes (6 medium-sized) should be enough.

Step Two

Clean your tomatoes with water and dry them with a paper towel.

Step Three

Cut your tomatoes into halves and remove their seeds. Then, chop the halves into finer pieces if your juicer requires small chunks. In most cases, centrifugal juicers will accommodate whole tomatoes, while masticating juicers will likely require that you chop them up.

Step Four

Turn on your juicer and insert your tomato pieces into the feeding chute. You should have a uniquely designed plunger that will help you push the tomatoes through.

Step Six

Collect your juice from the juicer container. You can store the juice in a fridge for a few hours (how long depends on the juicer), as long as it’s in an airtight container.

Step Seven

Turn off the juicer once you’ve got all your tomato juice and collect the pulp from the pulp collector. You can use the pulp to make sauces or enrich recipes.

Step Eight

Disassemble your juicer and clean it thoroughly. Before putting it back together, make sure everything is clean and dry.

How to Make Tomato Juice Taste Better

Sometimes, tomato juice can come out tasting less than awesome. Fortunately, there are ways to remedy the taste, and you don’t have to throw it all away.

Sweeten the Juice

Although tomatoes tend to be naturally sweet, they can also be mildly bitter. You can add a little bit of sugar to break the bitterness, but be careful not to make the juice too sweet.

Spice Things Up

red pepper flakes

If you like, you can make your tomato juice a little bit spicier by adding red pepper flakes, cayenne peppers, or hot sauces. Be careful with the hot sauces, though; they may add other unhealthy ingredients you don’t want. You can also experiment with spice powders and herbs to find new tastes.

Add Fresh Flavor

If you don’t like the idea of spicy tomato juice, you can increase the flavor by adding fresh ingredients like onions or celery.

Can You Use a Juicer to Can Tomatoes?

tomato sauce in jar

You can use a juicer to can your tomatoes. Here are the steps you’ll have to take:

Step One

Gather your tomatoes and wash them. Dry them off.

Step Two

Run the tomatoes through your juicer. Depending on the juicer you’re using, you may have to cut your tomatoes into smaller pieces. Collect the juice you’ve made.

Step Three

Heat your collected juice in a saucepan until it is simmering. Then, boil the juice for ten minutes, so you release all the juices from the small pieces and bits that escaped the juicer’s blade or mesh. If there are any seeds, strain the juice through a sieve.

Step Four

Place a metal canning rack in the bottom of a large pan that is big enough to hold the jars and tall enough to have at least one inch of water over the tops of the jars. Place the jars in the pan and make sure you’ve filled the inside of the jars with water. Bring to a boil for about ten minutes and put the lids in a separate bowl. Pour the boiling water over the lids.

Step Five

Remove the jars from the boiling water and put them upside down on a towel. Turn them the right side up and ladle in the hot tomato juice simmering. Fill the bottles up until half an inch is left at the top. To ensure no trapped air bubbles, run a knife through the juice. Wipe off the top of your jar and put a flat lid on the top. Now, screw on the rimmed lid.

Step Six

Put the freshly-filled jars back in the large pan on top of your canning rack. Make sure the jars don’t touch each other or the pan’s sides. Have a space of two inches between the pan’s sides and the jars. Once again, bring the water to a boil for ten minutes.

Step Seven

Remove the jars from the water, careful not to burn or drop them. Lift them by their sides with tongs. Leave the jars for 12 hours and then touch the top of the lid and push down in the center. You will notice that it does not flex up or down but instead forms a vacuum seal. Store your canned tomatoes in a dark place.

What is the Best Time to Drink Tomato Juice?

tomato juice drink

You will get the most out of your tomato juice if you drink it in the morning before you have breakfast. If you consume tomato juice on an empty stomach, you will absorb the nutrients quicker.

If you exercise regularly, you can drink your tomato juice after your exercise session in the morning. Don’t drink tomato juice at night.
