Types of Rice Cookers
Whether you’re buying an Asian rice cooker or looking for one in your local store, you should know that there are different types of cookers, all with their own reasons to love them.
Inductor Rice Cookers
This kind of rice cooker applies heat directly to the contents of its pot. It uses an electric plate to create heat and has more accurate temperature sensors than other types. The heat is distributed more evenly as well. You can change the heat almost instantly as well, which makes them highly convenient.
Fuzzy Logic Rice Cookers
Fuzzy logic rice cookers use internal computer chips to automatically adjust the temperatures and their cooking times. This means the cooker does all the hard work and thinking for you so you have perfectly cooked rice every time.
On/Off Rice Cookers
These are your most basic cookers that also come with a convenient ‘keep warm’ function. The rice cooker will switch to its keep warm mode as soon as your rice is done cooking.

Capacity
If you’re often cooking for a big family, it is important that you buy a rice cooker with a big capacity. Keep in mind that many cookers display their capacity in either cooked or uncooked measurements.
Take note of which one the cooker you want uses because this can lead to confusion and frustration if you want more rice than the cooker is able to make at a time.
Functionality
Most of these cookers come with additional features such as the ability to cook different kinds of rice. Some don’t so make sure you know all about the features and abilities of the rice cooker before you buy it.
Ease of Use
If you’re going to use the rice cooker often, it’s crucial that it’s easy to use. A complicated and complex rice cooker will take some getting used to, but if you like to keep things simple, make sure you choose a cooker that isn’t going to make you scratch your head in confusion.

Frequently Asked Questions
If you still have some questions about Asian rice cookers, don’t stress. I’ve answered some of the most commonly asked questions here for your convenience.
What Rice Cooker Do Most Asians Use?
The Zojirushi rice cookers are very popular in Asia, and all over the world because it is so well-made and effective.
What Is the Best Brand of Rice Cooker?
It is difficult to say because the best brand for you may differ from the best brand for someone else. Some of the most recommended brands are Zojirushi, Tiger, and Toshiba.
Do They Use Rice Cookers in China?
Yes, it is seen as a staple in just about every Chinese home.
Why Are Asian Rice Cookers Expensive?
Almost every Asian rice cooker is made specifically to make perfect rice, and a lot of design and technology goes into making these specialized appliances. They may seem simple on the outside, but these cookers are clever little machines and that cleverness comes at a price, of course.
What Is The Best Rice Cooker Brand?
This really depends on what you want to achieve with your rice cooker. Are you looking for something that can cook perfect jasmine rice? Or a rice cooker that can also make other meals like porridge? All the brands that made our list can qualify for the title of best Asian rice cooker, depending on who is buying them.
What Comes First, the Rice or the Water?
You should first measure out your rice and add it to the rice cooker’s inner pot. Based on the amount of rice you are going to cook, you have to add the water next. If you pour in the water first, you could end up with inaccurate measurements that will lead to dry, burnt, or soggy rice. Even the best rice cooker can’t make up for inaccurate measurements with the rice and water.
How Can I Prevent the Rice From Sticking to the Inner Pot?
If you rinse your rice thoroughly and remove all the excess starch and bran from it, you shouldn’t have any issues with the rice sticking to the sides and bottom of your inner pot.
You could also smear a thin layer of oil on the inner pot before you pour in your rice for cooking.
Can I Use a Rice Cooker When Traveling or Camping?
There is nothing stopping you from taking your favorite rice cooker with you when you travel around or go on camping trips. As long as you’re sure it can make enough rice for your trip, and that you have a sturdy bag to store it in, your rice cooker can go wherever you do.
If the cooker is too big or bulky, you can always buy a more compact one specifically for traveling and camping.
What Exactly Makes Asian Rice Cookers So Special?
You may be wondering what it is that makes these cookers so popular. There are several reasons, including being made from high-quality materials (most of the time). Here are four main reasons why everyone recommends rice cookers from Asia:
Fuzzy Logic Technology
The fuzzy logic technology used by Asian cookers makes them a lot smarter than similar cookers in the West. They can identify what has been put in them, and then decide how to proceed with the cooking process.
The technology also allows these appliances to make adjustments as required and control the cooking time as well as the temperature.
Because of this clever technology, human error is basically removed from the equation, leaving you with better-tasting rice every time you prepare it. The technology also helps to somewhat make up for us adding too little or too much water.
Keep Warm Function
All Asian rice cookers are equipped with a very convenient ‘keep warm’ function that will keep your cooked rice warm. This prevents it from losing moisture and becoming too dry and horrible-tasting to eat. Most cookers will keep your rice fresh this way for up to 12 hours, while also protecting your food against the growth of bacteria.
Multiple Menu Settings
Rice cookers made in Asia are prepared to make just about any kind of rice you can think of. From white rice to brown rice and jasmine rice. You name a kind of rice, and these cookers have the right settings for cooking them perfectly right on the menu.
Many of the settings also make it possible to prepare oatmeal, porridge, and even risotto in some cases. These types of cookers can be very versatile.
GABA Setting
This is a setting that not all Asian rice cookers have, but most of them do. It allows you to sprout and cook brown rice perfectly. Sprouted brown rice is praised for the nutritional value it offers, thanks to being a rich source of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
Typically, sprouting brown rice is complicated and can take up to 20 hours. When using a rice cooker with this setting, it only takes about three hours.
