Ease of Blending
The s55 is one of Vitamix’s few personal blenders. Personal blenders are one of the easiest ways to make single-serve products, and they typically come with lower price points than normal home blenders. Most personal blenders are stripped-back versions of regular blenders, and typically require you to push down on the container to operate it. The Vitamix is different; it’s one of the highest-tier personal blender on the market, so it comes with a suite of features that elevate it above the typical personal blenders on the market.
It comes with both a 40-oz container and a 20-oz travel cup, so you can create exactly the right size of blend. Both of these containers are BPA-free and dishwasher-safe.
Unlike most personal blenders, this one has four pre-programmed settings to help save you time and enable you to multi-task. If you’re making a smoothie for yourself every morning, the pre-programmed smoothie cycle means you can just add your ingredients to the container and switch it to that setting, to let the machine do all the work. It also has a frozen desserts cycle, a dip/spread cycle, and power blend cycle, so if you’re planning on using your machine regularly to create these sorts of things you can consider this a great investment.
As well as four pre-programmed settings, this model also comes with a variable 10-speed dial and a pulse function. It comes with a tamper to help you push the contents around your container, which is virtually unheard of in the personal blender market and means you don’t need to take open up your container, stir things around, then put it back together again to keep blending.
The Vitamix range is known for its great build quality – people buy into the brand purely because of its notorious durability and the quality of its materials. Like the other models in the brand, the s55 has laser-cut stainless-steel blades, a metal container-to-base coupling for greater durability, and containers made of BPA-free plastic.
This model is bigger than many other personal blenders on the market, but this gives it the required weight to stop it from moving around during blending and give it a quality feel. It is still smaller than the other Vitamix models, mainly because it is a personal blender rather than a larger home blender, and this means it’s easy to keep on the counter under the kitchen cabinet.
It has a sleek and attractive design compared to other personal blenders – another one of Vitamix’s hallmarks – with a stainless steel base and simple interface featuring a single dial. The dial allows you to change between ten different speeds and the four pre-programmed settings that the machine comes with.
Those pre-programmed settings may be the most useful part of this model, especially compared to other personal blenders. Virtually no personal blenders come with pre-programmed settings, which are common in high-tier home blenders for cutting down time and making blending a whole lot more convenient. This model comes with four: smoothies, power blends, dips/spreads, and frozen desserts. If you want confirmation that the s55 is one of the most versatile and powerful personal blenders on the market, these pre-programmed cycles should make that apparent.
The s55 is by no means the most powerful in the Vitamix range – it has a 1-peak horsepower, compared to the 2-peak horsepower of other blenders – but this is because it’s a personal blender rather than a home blender. Because of this, its container is smaller and so it requires less power to blend what’s inside. Plus, because it’s marketed as a personal blender, the assumption is that it’s designed for less intense blending than larger home blenders.
Because of its power compared to other personal blenders, it is a little noisier. But, considering that it’s so powerful, this seems like a fair exchange.
The s55 has a great, easy-to-use interface with only one component: a single dial. This dial allows you to change between ten different manual speeds as well as select one of the four pre-programmed cycles.
These pre-programmed settings, for smoothies, power blends, dips/spreads, and frozen desserts, make it so much easier to use the s55 than other blenders. Very few personal blenders come with these cycles – which allow you to just turn the dial to that setting and let the blender do the work. Compared to other personal blenders, where you have to stand over the blender and wait for it to finish, these cycles allow you to save time and energy.
Cleaning the s55 is very easy. The containers are not only dishwasher-safe, but can be easily cleaned by adding soap and water to the container and turning it on high for 30 seconds.
Because of the machine’s excellent build quality, the s55 comes with a five year warranty. It also comes with a built-in cooling fan that prevents the engine from overheating, even with heavy use, which means it is unlikely to die on you when you need it most – like when you’re creating a giant batch of soup for dinner or churning a new batch of nut butter, which can be taxing on lesser machines.
It should be noted that in the manual, Vitamix states that the speeds on this model should be varied over time; keeping it running at a consistent speed for a long amount of time will do damage to the motor, reducing its reliability.
The Nutribullet Pro 900 is a classic Magic Bullet offering: it’s powerful, affordable, and features a full range of accessories and blades for different uses. It comes with four containers in different sizes, a travel lid, two recipe books, and two different blade assemblies so you can customize your blender’s activity.
Its motor is slightly stronger than the Vitamix, at 1.2-peak horsepower compared to 1-peak horsepower. Because of this, it could potentially perform better when it comes to blending and especially when creating smooth, less grainy drinks. However, this difference may also be offset by the addition of the tamper in the Vitamix machine, which increases the blending ability of the machine.
The Vitamix tends to less budget friendly (*prices vary) than the Nutribullet Pro 900, which is likely to do with the addition of pre-programmed settings, a variable 10-speed dial, and a sleeker design. For this reason, the Vitamix is more suited to someone who has a bigger budget and wants a top-of-the-range personal blender with plenty of settings; the Nutribullet Pro 900 is better for someone who wants an incredibly powerful blender, with stripped-back functionality and a simple, easy-to-use interface.

The Nutri Ninja Pro is very similar to the s55 in terms of appearance and functionality. It has a slightly more powerful motor, at 1.2-peak horsepower, and comes with two sizes of cup, each of which is smaller than the s55 – 24-oz and 18-oz compared to 40-oz and 20-oz. If you’re looking for a slightly larger container, consider the Vitamix over the Nutri Ninja for this reason.
Unlike the s55, the Nutri Ninja Pro comes without manual speed control and without pre-programmed settings, with the classic push-down system of use that is common in personal blenders. It also does not come with a tamper, so food can occasionally become stuck in the container during blending. There have been reports that it is less than ideal at blending dry ingredients.
Consider the Nutri Ninja Pro if you’re looking for a simple but powerful machine with great build quality that's likely to be easy on your wallet – if you’re looking for something more intuitive, with more versatility, go for the Vitamix instead – especially if you’re planning on using it daily.
Hamilton Beach is an up-and-coming blender brand known for its affordable models that still deliver great performance. While not as reliable as the s55, this model in particular tends to be more affordable, and still provides many of the hallmarks of the s55: pre-programmed settings, large container, and sleek design. Unlike the s55, it is not a personal blender, so its container is much larger and it can be used for more varied blends, but at the cost of convenience.
Because the Vitamix is a Vitamix, much of its price point comes down to known durability; as a brand, Vitamix is known for creating products that just ‘work’, creating great products every time.
The Hamilton Beach model is not quite as powerful as the Vitamix, at 0.9-peak horsepower compared to 1-peak, but this difference is virtually negligible when it comes to actual performance, seeing as both models come with 40-oz containers. Both models come with pre-programmed settings, although the Hamilton Beach does not have manual speed settings like the knob on the S55.
Because both machines are similar in terms of specs, the Hamilton Beach Smoothie Smart Blender can be recommended to anyone looking for a larger blender that can take on some basic smoothies and sauces. However, the odds are is that it simply won't withstand the test of time in a way that a Vitamix can.
