The Black and Decker Air Fryer is a great air fryer with some classic, excellent specs that rival may other models on the market. It’s smaller than most of the other models, at 2L instead of the regular 3.7 quart capacity. If you’re looking for a small, attractive, sleek model with great frying power, the Black and Decker is an excellent choice.
This model has a couple of features that are great benefits compared to other air fryers on the market.
It has a 2L capacity, which is a great size for the everyday user. It’s large enough to fit food for a regular family, but probably not large enough to cater for a dinner party or large family. It’s small enough that it isn’t conspicuous in your kitchen, and the attractive design makes it something that you’ll be happy to have on display.
This model comes with variable temperature control, with the option to set the air fryer’s temperature between 175° and 400°F for great control. It also comes with a 60-minute timer. Both of these settings can be set by the large dials on the front of the machine. The machine has dual fans to help it heat the air quickly and more evenly than other air fryers, to make sure food cooks evenly instead of spots of increased heat and cold.
The Black and Decker Air Fryer is dishwasher-safe for easy clean-up, which makes it easier than other models that must be hand-washed. It also has a two-year limited warranty, which is about 12 months longer than the warranties of other models on the market.
Design and build quality
The Black and Decker Air Fryer is a very attractive model. It comes in two colors – black and white – both of which are sleek and shiny. Unusually, each of the colors has a slightly different design. The black design has a wider top and is accented with stainless steel, while the white design is more of an egg shape and has black accents. Both look modern and would go well in a style-forward kitchen.
Each model has two dials, one to control temperature and one to control the timer. The temperature dial is marked in both Fahrenheit and Celsius, for easy conversion, and ranges from between 175° and 400°F – which is a wide enough range to allow you to cook all sorts of things without an issue. The timer dial can be set between 0 and 60 minutes, but the analog nature of the dial makes it hard to get very specific; times are marked at the five-minute mark.
This model is a useful size, with a 2L capacity that will allow you to fit most things you’d like to fry, assuming that you aren’t cooking for a crowd.
Ease of use
This model is quite easy to use. It’s a simple design, with only two dials: one to set the fryer temperature and the other to set the timer. You simply need to set the temperature, load the fryer, and allow it to do its work.
It’s slightly less easy to use than both digital models and models with pre-programmed settings. It’s harder to use than a digital model because the dials mean that you can’t control the machine as specifically as you may like to; you can’t set specific temperatures, but instead have to guess between marked five-minute and 50°F sections. Digital models allow you complete control, as you can use the digital interface to select exact temperatures and times.
It’s also slightly harder to use this model than one with pre-programmed settings. Some more advanced air fryer models have pre-programmed settings for certain types of foods or cooking styles, which allow you to add those ingredients to your air fryer, press a button, and allow the machine to set the cooking time and temperature automatically instead of having to look up the recommended settings. This is especially useful if you are cooking the same thing regularly, as you don’t need to bother with setting the air fryer every time; although most recipes, like this air fryer brussel sprout recipe, are very easy anyway.
This model is dishwasher-safe, so it’s very easy to clean; you just need to disassemble the parts and put them through the machine. The outside is also sleek enough that you can just wipe it down in case of spills; however, the large dials may collect dirt and spills more than a flat, touch-screen digital interface would which would be easier to clean had it been flat in digital (a small detail, but something to consider).
Comparing the Black and Decker to Other Fryers
The GoWISE 4th Generation Electric Air Fryer is one of the top models on the market, and slightly different in many ways from the Black and Decker. It has a larger capacity, at 3.7 quarts, which is roughly twice the size of the Black and Decker. As a result, it’s better for someone who’s looking for a slightly larger capacity, such as someone who’s cooking for a family (especially when it comes to a recipe like this air-fried tofu; it's so good, you'll want to cook a massive batch).
Both models have the same variable temperature range and are both dishwasher-safe. Both have timers, but the Black and Decker's is longer: a 60-minute timer as opposed to the GoWISE’s 30-minute timer.
The GoWISE model excels when it comes to pre-programmed settings. It has seven, whereas the Black and Decker has none, which makes it much easier to use technically speaking (but both will be easy).
If you’re planning on cooking the things that are listed on the settings (which includes cake) – or if you’re planning to cook things that take similar temperatures and cooking times, this will be a very helpful addition for you. It also comes with a recipe book, it is also manufactured in a few different colors (**availability may vary) instead of the Black and Decker's black and white options.
The GoWISE is a much better option if you’d prefer a more advanced model, with useful pre-programmed settings, more color options, and a larger capacity. The Black and Decker is better if you’d prefer a more attractive design with a smaller capacity to fit in a smaller kitchen, or if you don’t need to cook as much food.
The Power AirFryer XL is also quite different from the Black and Decker. It has the same variable temperature range and also comes in two colors – although these colors are black and red, rather than the Black and Decker’s black and white. Apart from these two similarities, the two models are very different.
The Power model comes with seven pre-programmed settings while the Black and Decker has none. Having pre-programmed settings, as mentioned above, makes it much easier to use the device as the machine will establish its own settings for you and there will be little to no guesswork. It has a substantially larger capacity, at 5.3 quarts instead of 2L, which is roughly two and a half times as much.
It also has a much shorter warranty – it’s only 60 days, while the Black and Decker’s warranty is two years. It’s likely that the latter’s build quality is a little better because of this.
The Power Airfryer XL is better if you’d like a large air fryer with plenty of pre-programmed settings and a digital interface. The Black and Decker is better if you’d prefer a smaller machine with and a longer warranty.
The Power fryers are also manufactured in various sizes so be sure to keep an eye out for those if this is a unit you're interested in.
The Philips Airfryer is the original air fryer, and one of the best on the market. It performs admirably, and its patented starfish design – and the design of the following XL version of this same model – is designed to circulate air evenly to create fast and even cooking results.
This is probably the model that’s most similar to the Black and Decker. Neither have any pre-programmed settings, and both come in both black and white attractive designs. They both have dishwasher-safe parts, but the Philips has a 1 year guarantee as shown on Philip's website - a year shorter than the Black and Decker.
The Philips model does have a slightly larger capacity, at 1.75lbs, which is about double as much as the Black and Decker model. As a result, it’s better if you’d like a larger model with a potentially better cooking system through the patented starfish design; the Black and Decker is ideal for someone who doesn't need a huge machine and wants the security of a longer warranty.
